Sunscreen 101: Your Guide to the Best Sunscreens in New Zealand

Did you know that New Zealand has some of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world?

This is partly to do with the reduction in ozone in our atmosphere. The ozone layer protects the Earth against most ultraviolet light coming from the sun. According to NIWA, this year’s ozone hole will stay around for longer than usual, largely due to a combination of climate change and the 2022 Tonga volcanic eruption. This could affect New Zealand’s summer UV levels for the rest of the decade.

We all know that sunscreen is a must when summer arrives. This is the time to pay attention to the UV index: the measure of UV intensity. Anything over 10 is considered ‘extreme’. In New Zealand, the UV index can reach around 12.

What does that mean for you? More slip, slop, slapping!

Let’s explain what to look for in a sunscreen, and the best sunscreens we have on offer.

What should you look for in a sunscreen?

The first thing to look for is a high Sun Protection Factor (SPF). The SPF is the measure of how well a sunscreen will protect you against UVB rays (the rays that cause sunburn). The higher the SPF, the greater the level of protection.
It’s also important to check that your sunscreen is ‘broad spectrum’, as this means it will protect you against both UVA and UVB rays. While UVB protection is important for preventing sunburn (and the lobster look), UVA radiation is shown to contribute to the development of skin cancer.
The New Zealand Dermatological Society recommends broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF50 or higher. This offers the highest level of protection for a longer period of time.

That said, a lower SPF will still protect you from the sun - as long as you reapply every two hours, and also after swimming or showering.

Are the chemicals in sunscreens bad for you?

The Sunscreen (Product Safety Standard) Act 2022 Act means that sunscreen manufacturers and retailers must comply with official product safety standards. In other words, sunscreens in NZ can only be sold if they have been assessed for quality and safety through rigorous scientific testing. There is very strong evidence that the active ingredients used in sunscreens do not pose a risk to human health. (It’s also worth pointing out that not wearing sunscreen can be far more harmful!). If you’d still prefer to avoid chemicals, there are plenty of organic or natural sunscreens made with ingredients such as zinc to physically block UV rays.
