First Aid Essentials for Every Home

Whether you’re a parent, a partner, a boss, or remote worker, or just an average adult - you need a first aid kit!

Accidents can happen any time, anywhere: in the home, car, office, gym, sports field… the list goes on. And when there are kids around, accidents are almost a daily occurence.

A first aid kit means you’ll be able to tend to minor mishaps quickly and easily, or at least stabilize an injury or illness until professional help arrives. Prompt first aid can help to reduce the risk of complications while tending to pain and supporting faster healing.

So, what should you have in your kit?

A good first aid kit items list should include everything you might need to deal with minor injuries like cuts, burns, scrapes, sprains, and strains. Basic supplies should include bandaids, bandages, antiseptic solutions, gauze, tape, and cold packs - plus a few tools like scissors, tweezers, and safety pins.

If you don’t currently have a home first aid kit, or your current kit needs updating, now is the time to do it! And Bargain Chemist has everything you’ll need - from done-for-you kits right down to refill items (including Peppa Pig Bandaids!)

Just remember to replace items in your kit each time they’re used.

Antiseptic treatment

Cuts, abrasions and other wounds can heal much more quickly if they are cleaned with antiseptic solution before they are dressed. Antiseptic treatment is even more important if an injury happens in an area with lots of germs around, like outdoors or at school. Antiseptic creams help to support the healing process by protecting against infection. Crystaderm® First Aid Cream contains 1% hydrogen peroxide for the treatment and prevention of minor skin infections such as acne, cuts, scrapes, burns or school sores. The 10g tube is the perfect size for any first aid kit!

Thursday Plantation Tea Tree Manuka Honey Wound Balm is another great option for minor cuts and grazes. This triple action balm contains the natural antiseptic properties of 100% pure Tea Tree Oil along with with Manuka Honey to support healthy wound healing and repair.

Instant ice packs

Slips, trips and falls can happen anytime, anywhere - and they often lead to painful bumps, bruises, and sprains. But applying an ice pack straightaway can make all the difference.

An ice pack is one of the best ways to respond to an injury. Cold application can help to reduce swelling and pain by slowing blood flow to the area. Most sprains or pulled muscles can be treated with ice therapy for around three to five days - check with a health professional first.

The USL Instant Ice Pack is perfect for any first aid kid. It’s small and light, and there’s no need to freeze! Simply apply pressure to the inner pouch and it freezes instantly. Great for the sports field or in the home.

Or grab the d3 Instant Ice Pack set and you’ll be covered in three places at once. This affordable set contains three convenient instant ice packs that easily fit into a first aid kit, handbag, glove-box or wherever else you might need them. They’re activated instantly when you squeeze the bag, ready to be applied directly to an injury. These packs can also be used with the d3 RICED neoprene strap (sold separately) which helps keep the pack in place.

Wound dressings

Choosing the right wound dressings for your first aid kit might feel a little overwhelming when you see the enormous range available! Plasters and gauze come in all shapes and sizes, and it’s impossible to predict the size of any particular injury.

A dressing is designed to protect a wound from bacteria while it's healing and prevent infection. It should be large enough to cover the wound completely, with about 2.5 cm to spare on all sides. For larger cuts or abrasions, you may need to use a sterile dressing such as gauze to cover the area and stem the bleeding.

Bargain Chemist has a wide range of wound dressings suitable for almost any skin injury. Just remember to include a pair of scissors in your kit to cut the dressing to size if you need to. And grab a roll of hypoallergenic Nexcare Micropore Gentle Paper Tape to keep the dressing in place without irritating the skin. This tape is especially handy for post-surgery use and any situation that requires frequent gauze changes.

And don’t forget the plasters! Plasters (or Bandaids) are a simple solution to minor cuts and grazes. The Band-Aid Assorted Plastic Shapes 50 Pack means you’ll have an option for almost any situation. And if you’ve got little ones, a pack of Peppa Pig Kids Plasters will help to make any “ouchie” better!
